ASPIRE – Amathole Economic Development Agency, in collaboration with Impact Africa, successfully concluded a three-session series of Oil and Gas Voluntary Knowledge Sharing engagements across the Amathole region. The sessions, held in Mnquma Local Municipality (Gqunkqe), Great Kei Local Municipality (Chintsa Sports Field), and Ngqushwa Local Municipality (Hamburg eMthonjeni), were designed to empower communities with factual, accessible information about oil and gas developments in Area 2, where Impact Africa is licensed to explore.
The initiative drew a diverse and influential group of stakeholders, including ASPIRE board, municipal representatives, ward councillors, business forums, youth leaders, traditional leaders, and community formations. Their presence underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue and transparent engagement in shaping the region’s developmental trajectory.
Dr. Masangane, representing Impact Africa, delivered expert insights into the oil and gas sector as a vital component of the oceans economy. Her presentation addressed community concerns and misconceptions, particularly around the coexistence of oil and gas exploration with fisheries. Drawing on global examples such as Norway and Namibia, she emphasized that sustainable development is both possible and necessary.
ASPIRE CEO, Mr. Avuyile Xabadiya, reaffirmed ASPIRE’s role as a stakeholder engagement consultant for Impact Africa. He highlighted the sessions as a platform for informed decision-making, rooted in research and community empowerment. “These engagements are about equipping our people with knowledge that enables them to participate meaningfully in developmental processes,” he stated.
South African Youth Council (SAYC) Amathole Regional Chairperson, Mr. Siyamthanda Ngquthwana, called for greater youth involvement, stressing that young people must be at the forefront of development initiatives. His remarks echoed a broader call for intergenerational participation and leadership.
Chief Ngondoyi of Gqunkqe expressed optimism about the potential economic benefits for his community, which faces high unemployment and socio-economic challenges. He emphasised the need for grassroots consultation and transparency throughout the exploration process.
The series concluded with renewed commitment to community engagement, ethical development, and inclusive growth. ASPIRE and Impact Africa extend their gratitude to all participants and reaffirm their dedication to ongoing dialogue and empowerment in the region.
