Amathole District Municipality, in partnership with ASPIRE (Amathole Economic Development Agency), joined by the Eastern Cape Department of Education, the Amathole South African Youth Council, and the Department of Agriculture, successfully commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day through a series of impactful community initiatives on 18 July 2026 in Sheshegu Village, Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality.
The commemorative programme commenced at Dalubuhle High School, where stakeholders united to rehabilitate and improve the school's learning environment before concluding with a symbolic home visit to the family of the late liberation stalwart and Rivonia Trialist, Mr. Raymond Mhlaba. More than a fulfilment of the annual 67 Minutes for Mandela, the day's activities embodied the enduring values championed by Tata Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela—education, servant leadership, community empowerment, dignity and collective action.
The programme reflected a shared commitment of investing in the future of young people while honouring the sacrifices of those whose struggle secured South Africa's democracy.The rehabilitation of Dalubuhle High School further demonstrated the importance of collaborative governance and the District Development Model in action, where government departments, development agencies, community structures and local residents worked together towards a common purpose.
The initiative also highlighted the role of partnerships in advancing local economic development through skills transfer while preserving the legacy of South Africa's liberation heroes.
Addressing learners, educators and community members, Executive Mayor Cllr. Anele Ntsangani described the initiative as a practical demonstration of what can be achieved when institutions unite behind a shared vision."This is just the beginning. It is in our hands to change the situation of this school. There is a bright future in this community. Three consecutive years of achieving a 100% matric pass rate is proof that excellence already exists here, and together we must create an environment that matches that excellence."The Executive Mayor noted that the rehabilitation of the school would restore dignity to both learners and educators by providing a safe, functional and inspiring learning environment. He further emphasised that the improvements would assist the school in meeting the strict compliance requirements for the administration of the National Senior Certificate examinations.
School Principal Ms. Mpofu welcomed the intervention, highlighting the significance of the improvements."We can now confidently say that examinations will once again be written at the school instead of learners having to use the nearby community hall. This is a significant milestone because examination venues are regulated by Umalusi. Having our own compliant examination centre safeguards the integrity of the examination process, prevents irregularities and ensures our learners are not disadvantaged through non-compliance."The Principal further expressed appreciation for the collective efforts of Amathole District Municipality, ASPIRE, government partners and members of the community whose support made the intervention possible.
Community members were equally recognised for embracing the Executive Mayor's vision by volunteering their time and resources to support the rehabilitation programme, demonstrating that sustainable development is achieved when government and communities work hand in hand. During the programme, the Eastern Cape Department of Education reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Dalubuhle High School through learner attainment strategies aimed at sustaining excellent academic performance and ensuring that future 100% matric pass rates continue to be defined by both quality and academic excellence.
Speaking on behalf of the learners, the school's student representative expressed sincere gratitude to Amathole District Municipality and ASPIRE for investing in their future. She said the newly renovated learning environment had renewed the confidence and motivation of learners, adding that they were committed to honouring the investment made in them by striving for academic excellence and maintaining the school's proud record of outstanding matric results.
The programme concluded with a deeply symbolic visit to the home of the late liberation icon Mr. Raymond Mhlaba, where the Executive Mayor and Councillors engaged with the Mhlaba family while simultaneously performing maintenance activities, including grass cutting and the handover of painting materials, with additional support planned over the coming months.
Reflecting on the visit, Executive Mayor Ntsangani emphasised the importance of preserving South Africa's liberation heritage."This home is a living legacy. As we celebrate the life and values of Tata Nelson Mandela, we must also remember those who stood beside him in the struggle for freedom. It is because of their courage, sacrifice and resilience that we have the privilege to serve our communities today. Their legacy must continue to inspire generations to come” said Ntsangani.
The Executive Mayor further noted that the Raymond Mhlaba family home represents an important chapter in South Africa's liberation history and deserves recognition as a site of historical significance, given its association with one of the Rivonia Trialists and one of the country's foremost freedom fighters. Amathole District Municipality's commitment to investing in schools, empowering young people and honouring the country's liberation icons continues to advance as the vision of a united, prosperous and inclusive district where no community is left behind takes priority.
